Rani Karnavathi : The unsung queen

Sanjay Leela Bansali’s Padmavat was the huge buzz creator of the year 2018. The movie is based on the breathtaking beauty of Queen Padmavati, which turned out to be a curse later, when the brutally portrayed Mughal emperor Alauddin khilji fell head over heels for her. He killed her husband Raja Ratan Singh and hunted entire Chittorgarh but only the screams of Rani Padmavati and the women of the palace awaited him, as they performed Jauhar - embracing the raging fire.

Rani Karnavathi:
Though it is believed to be fictitious, the 13th century history once again repeated in the 16th century. This time it went unnoticed and did not receive much attention as the story of Padmavati received . It is about Rani Karnavathi, wife of Raja Rana Sangha who succumbed to the war and was left with two minor children. But this story has an altogether different aspect which can even be celebrated by the mughals.

As the king passed away, the entire royal responsibility was sought on the Queen Karnavathi. She was one of the ablest queens of India and was ready to perform her duty. But a dangerous threat she has to face was from the King of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah. Karnavathi tried out all diplomatic efforts and was successful in saving her kingdom only for a short period. When Bahadur Shah was determined to conquer Chittorgarh, she took a step which was historic and still remembered.

Untold relationship:
Karnavati, after losing support from the fellow Rajput rulers, decided to get help from Humayun, the mughal emperor himself. She extended a relationship of brother-sister by sending him a rakhi, a sacred thread which is tied by the sisters to their brothers on the day of Raksha bandhan thus seeking a promise of safeguard to their life and dignity. Humayun, who had good terms with Rajputs understood the importance of the rakhi and decided to take up the responsibility.

History repeats :
Humayun was at the eastern part of the kingdom, engaged in extending his empire. Stories say that , Humayun reached Chittorgarh a bit delayed, before which Rani Karnavati and her female aides performed the traditional sacrifice Jauhar. There are many criticisms on performing Jauhar, as an act of cowardness but be it Rani Padmavati or Rani Karnavati, Jauhar was not their first choice. It was their last resort after trying out all options. Rani Karnavati is still remembered on every raksha bandhan and also sets an example of communal harmony, the baseline of unity of Bharat.
