India is shifting from premier league fever to regional games mania, as the most expected multidisciplinary sport , embracing all Asian countries, is triggered to start from today - 18 August, 2018 and interestingly it to be the 18th edition. That sounds special ! Indonesia has won the bidding to host this prestigious regional games this time. So , as entire Asia is on fire, let’s have some insights on Asian Games.
Special mention to India:
Olympics ruled the world for years right from its inception, absorbing sports and talents from all over the world. Regional sports events gained guidelines from Olympics and started emerging, following its foot steps. One such offshoot was the Oriental Olympics, later known as Far East Championship Games ,during earlier 1900s. West Asian games was one such event held in New Delhi in the year 1934 including india, Afghanistan, Palestine and Srilanka.
The spark of initiating Asian Games rose on the sidelines of London Olympics in 1948 by India, Srilanka, Myanmar, Philippines, Taiwan and Korea. It got materialised under the monitoring of Asian Games Federation in 1949. India holds the honor of not only being the founder member of Asian Games but also the host of its first edition in 1951 at New Delhi. Presently administered by Olympic Council of Asia, Asian games which was approved by International Olympics Committee, and stands to be the second most celebrated sports event after Olympics.

Designed as a model of Gelora Bung Karno stadium’s aerial view, built for 1962 Jakarta Asian games.

Energy driven Aquatics and Athletics being the central core of Asian games , the theme goes like “Energy of Asia”. The trio - Bhin bhin, the bird of paradise representing the eastern part, Ika, the one horned rhinoceros repesenting the western part and Atung , the Bawean deer representing the central part of Indonesia, forms the official mascots. Main focus of the event is not only to promote talents of sports but also to deepen the friendship among the participating countries.
India’s journey in Asian Games:
As quoted already, India is one of the foundations of Asian Games and the first one to experience it in action. The once in four years Asian Games event was hosted for two terms by India in 1951 and 1982. India found its place within top ten medal holders list so far and same output is expected this time too. The ace athlete Neeraj Chopra to bear the tricolor this time. Participating in 39 sports with 312 male participants and 258 female participants.
The entire country is eagerly expecting to count on the medals earned by our athletes. The winning participants will earn iconic status and will be celebrated by the whole of nation , thus inspiring the youth to show more interest towards sports. Asian Games may act as the testing ground of realising the ‘Mission Khelo Bharat’ where the focus of the mission is to earn 50 medals by Olympics 2022.
